Commercial Pigeon Proofing

On a commercial building, pigeons are more than a nuisance. Droppings over a shop entrance put customers off, fouled walkways become slippery, blocked gutters leak into units and residents in a block of flats complain to the managing agent. We plan pigeon proofing for larger buildings as a whole, so birds are not simply moved from one ledge to the next.

Buildings we work on

Shops and parades with canopies and signage, warehouses and industrial units with loading bays and high beams, schools and community buildings with tall roofs and ledges, blocks of flats with balconies and communal roofs, and multi-storey or covered car parks with sheltered beams all attract pigeons.

Solar arrays on commercial roofs are another common nesting site, proofed with mesh in the same way as on homes.

Surveying the problem

The first step is understanding where birds actually roost, nest and feed. Droppings on the ground, staining on walls and birds visible at different times of day all point to the problem areas. Photographs from you help us prepare.

From there we suggest which areas to proof, which method suits each, and an order of priority if the budget means doing the work in stages.

Choosing methods for each area

Netting closes off recesses, canopies, loading bays and balconies. Spikes and wire stop perching on ledges, parapets, signs and gutters. Mesh blocks gaps and the edges of solar arrays. Most larger buildings need a mix.

Products, fixings and access methods are confirmed at quote, because they depend on the building, its height and how it is used.

Working around occupants

Shops stay open, residents come and go and schools have timetables. We discuss timing with you so work causes as little disruption as possible, and keep entrances and walkways safe while we are on site.

For managing agents, we can provide a written description of the proposed work to share with leaseholders or residents in advance, and photographs of the completed areas afterwards.

Clearing droppings and debris

Large accumulations of droppings and nesting material are cleared before deterrents are fitted, using sensible hygiene precautions. Gutters, outlets and flat roof drains blocked by debris are cleared at the same time.

Our commercial gutter cleaning and commercial roof cleaning services can be combined with proofing.

Humane and timed around nesting

We do not trap, harm or poison birds, and active nests are not disturbed. On a large building, that may mean proofing some areas straight away and returning to others once nesting there has finished.

Gulls on flat commercial roofs are a related issue; see our gulls on roofs guide.

Shops and high streets

Pigeons on canopies, signs and ledges above shop entrances leave droppings where customers walk. Proofing those features, along with any recesses above the shopfront, makes a visible difference quickly. Work can be timed outside trading hours where needed.

Clean entrances are easier to keep clean once birds are no longer perching directly overhead.

Warehouses, units and car parks

High beams, roof trusses, loading bay canopies and open-sided structures give pigeons sheltered roosts. Netting at beam level and over canopies, combined with closing gaps where birds get in, is the usual approach.

Car parks with covered levels and exposed beams follow the same principles, with access planned around vehicles and users.

Schools, churches and community buildings

Tall roofs, towers, ledges and gutters on community buildings attract birds, and budgets are often tight. Prioritising entrances, play areas and blocked gutters gives the best value first.

Our community buildings guide covers roof and gutter care for these sites.

Common questions

Do you work on blocks of flats?

Yes, including balconies and communal roofs, planned with the managing agent.

Can work be done outside opening hours?

Timing is discussed at quote stage to keep disruption low.

Can the work be phased?

Yes. We can prioritise the worst areas and plan the rest in stages.

Do you proof solar panels on commercial roofs?

Yes, using mesh around the array as on homes.

Will you provide a record of the work?

We can describe the proposed work in writing beforehand and photograph completed areas afterwards.

Do you clear droppings from loading bays and walkways?

Accessible droppings in the areas being proofed are cleared first, with the scope agreed at quote.

Can you quote for several sites?

Yes. Managing agents and businesses with several buildings can ask for each site to be quoted, with photographs of each.

Can you work at schools during term time?

We plan timing with the school, often favouring holidays or times when areas are not in use.
