Pigeon Proofing

Feral pigeons are drawn to sheltered ledges, warm gaps and reliable food. On a house that usually means the space under solar panels, gaps in soffits, chimney ledges, gutters and the ridge. A pair that nests successfully tends to return and attract others. We proof homes humanely, keeping pigeons out of the places they cause problems without harming them.

The problems pigeons cause

Nesting material and droppings block gutters and downpipes, which then overflow down walls. Droppings stain patios, cars, windowsills and render, and they are acidic enough to mark stone and paint over time. Cooing and scratching at dawn can be relentless, especially above bedrooms.

Birds can also enlarge gaps in soffits and lift loose tiles to get into roof spaces, and large piles of dry nesting material under solar panels are best not left to build up.

Where pigeons nest on homes

The gap beneath solar panels is the most common nesting spot we hear about. Others include gaps behind fascias and soffits, chimney stacks with wide ledges, flat roofs with parapets, valleys between roof slopes, and the tops of gutters below dormers or extensions.

Our guide to the signs pigeons are nesting in your roof explains what to look and listen for.

Proofing options

Different problems need different solutions. Mesh closes gaps, such as under solar panels or holes in eaves. Spikes and wire stop birds landing on ledges, parapets and gutter edges. Netting closes off larger spaces such as recesses, balconies and courtyards.

We recommend what suits the building after seeing where birds actually sit and nest. Many homes need a combination. Specific products and fixings are confirmed at quote; our netting, spikes and mesh guide compares them.

Humane and lawful

Wild birds, their eggs and nests in use are generally protected in the UK. We do not disturb active nests, trap birds or use poisons and sticky gels. Proofing is planned for when nesting in the area has finished, after checking that no nest is in use.

That can mean waiting a short while before work starts, but it keeps the job humane and within the rules. See are bird spikes humane and legal for general background.

Clearing up as well as keeping out

Before deterrents are fitted, accessible nesting material and droppings are cleared and bagged, using sensible hygiene precautions. Gutters and outlets below nesting sites are cleared too, because they usually collect the worst of the debris.

Clearing the material removes scent and nesting cues that might otherwise draw birds back to try again.

Pigeon proofing often goes hand in hand with solar panel cleaning, gutter cleaning and gutter repairs where birds have loosened brackets. For specific areas, see pigeon proofing for solar panels, bird netting and bird spikes and deterrents.

What happens on the day

We set up access, check again that no active nests are present, clear accessible debris and droppings, and fit the agreed deterrents. Gutters below the work area are cleared before we leave, and the ground below is tidied.

Photographs of the finished areas let you see what was done on parts of the roof you cannot view from the garden.

Neighbouring houses

Pigeons often use several roofs on a street. Proofing one house can push birds to the next, especially where neighbours also have solar panels. If neighbours have the same problem, it is worth talking to them; we can quote for several homes together.

Coordinated proofing tends to give a calmer result for the whole street than tackling one roof at a time.

Reducing the attraction

Proofing works best alongside simple changes at ground level. Bird feeders that spill seed, open bins and food left out for pets all draw pigeons in. Moving feeders away from the house and using trays that catch seed helps.

None of this replaces proofing where birds are nesting, but it reduces the pressure on the deterrents.

Common questions

Do you harm or remove pigeons?

No. Proofing stops birds landing or nesting in problem areas without harming them.

Can you proof while birds are nesting?

Active nests are not disturbed. Work is planned for when nesting in that area has finished.

Will you clean up the droppings?

Accessible droppings and nesting material are cleared before deterrents go on, with the scope confirmed at quote.

Which deterrent will I need?

It depends on where birds sit or nest. Mesh suits gaps, spikes suit ledges and netting suits larger spaces.

Do you proof solar panels?

Yes. Mesh around the array keeps pigeons from nesting underneath.

How long does pigeon proofing take?

It depends on the areas involved and access. We give an idea of timing with the quote.
