Why panels get dirty
Dust, pollen and traffic grime settle on the glass and are partly rinsed by rain. What rain does not shift is the band of dirt that builds where water slows at the bottom edge, bird droppings that dry hard and stick, sap from overhanging trees, and moss or lichen creeping from the frame and surrounding tiles.
Panels on shallow pitches, north-facing slopes or under trees soil faster. Houses near farmland, busy roads or the coast can also see more build-up than those in open, clean settings.
Bird droppings and nesting
Droppings are the most common reason people ask us to clean panels. They block light completely where they land, and if the same panels keep getting covered, birds are probably perching on the ridge above or nesting in the gap underneath.
If we find signs of nesting, we will tell you. Cleaning restores the glass, but pigeon proofing for solar panels is what keeps birds out from under the array.
How we clean panels
Panel glass carries coatings and the frames have seals, so harsh detergents, abrasive pads and high-pressure jets are not used. We soften and lift dirt with clean water and soft brushes at low pressure, ease moss away from frame edges by hand and rinse the glass so it dries clear.
We look at the panels before starting. If we see cracked glass, damaged frames, loose cabling or scorch marks, we stop and tell you, because damaged panels should be looked at by your installer rather than cleaned.
Access and safety
Most panels are on pitched roofs, which is why we advise owners not to climb up themselves. The access method depends on the height, pitch and layout of your roof and is confirmed when we quote.
Ground-mounted arrays and panels on low garage or outbuilding roofs are simpler to reach, and we clean those too.
The roof and gutters around your panels
Moss on tiles around an array spreads onto the frames and washes into gutters. If the roof needs attention, we remove moss by hand and use a soft wash and biocide where suitable, working carefully around the panels, then clean the glass last. We never pressure wash roof tiles.
Gutters below panels often collect debris from the glass, the roof and any nests, so clearing them at the end of the visit is sensible. Our moss removal and gutter cleaning services can be included in the same quote.
How often panels need cleaning
There is no fixed schedule. Some panels stay clear for years; others near trees or bird roosts need attention more often. Looking at your panels from the ground and comparing generation figures with earlier years is the best guide.
Our how often to clean solar panels guide explains what to look for, and do dirty panels lose efficiency explains why dense patches matter more than light dust.
What we check while cleaning
While working on the panels, we look at the frames, the visible cabling, the edges of the array and the tiles around it. Gaps where birds could get underneath, moss creeping onto the glass and debris trapped at the bottom edge are all noted.
You receive a plain description of what we saw. Anything beyond cleaning, such as proofing or roof work, is quoted separately and only carried out if you choose.
Commercial and larger arrays
Solar arrays on commercial units, farm buildings, schools and blocks of flats follow the same gentle principles on a larger scale. Access, timing and working around occupants are planned with you.
Where birds have colonised a large array, our commercial pigeon proofing service can be combined with the clean.
Getting a quote
Tell us how many panels you have, where they are on the roof and whether you have noticed birds. A photograph from the ground helps. Use the form on this page, WhatsApp or call 07752 853583 for a free, no-obligation quote.
Common questions
Do you use pressure washers on solar panels?
No. We use clean water, soft brushes and low pressure so coatings and seals are not damaged.
Can you stop birds getting under my panels?
Yes. We fit mesh around arrays as a separate service, planned around any active nests.
Will you clean the roof at the same time?
If needed. Roof moss is removed by hand with soft wash and biocide where suitable, and panels are cleaned afterwards.
What if a panel is damaged?
We stop and tell you. Damaged panels should be checked by your installer.
Do you clean ground-mounted panels?
Yes, as well as panels on garages, outbuildings and commercial roofs.
Do I need to switch my system off?
Panels produce electricity whenever light reaches them. We do not touch electrical parts, and if anything looks damaged we stop and tell you.
