Driveway Cleaning

A driveway is the first thing visitors walk across, and it takes more punishment than any other surface around the house: tyres, oil drips, leaf fall, soil from borders and whatever washes off the roof. We clean block paving, tarmac, concrete and resin drives, and tidy gravel edges, choosing the method to suit the surface rather than turning every job into a blast with a pressure washer.

Surfaces we clean

Block paving is the most common drive we see, and its joints need as much attention as the blocks. Tarmac needs controlled washing so the binder and surface stone stay put. Plain and printed concrete each need their own approach, and resin bound and bonded drives call for gentle methods that will not loosen the aggregate.

Gravel drives are cleared rather than washed: weeds and moss are lifted, edges are tidied and debris is removed. Many drives combine more than one surface, such as tarmac with a block border, and each part is treated on its own terms.

What we deal with

Moss in joints and cracks, green and black algae across the surface, weeds along edges, leaf and tannin staining under trees, tyre marks where cars turn and general grime are the usual reasons people call. Oil stains can often be lightened with a suitable treatment, though very old marks may leave a shadow.

We tell you at quote stage which marks are likely to clean up fully and which will improve but remain visible, so the result matches what you expect.

How a driveway clean works

We start by walking the drive and noting loose or sunken areas, failed joints, drainage points and anything that needs protecting, such as planted borders, door thresholds and air bricks. Weeds and moss are lifted from joints and edges first, so the wash removes them rather than spreading them.

The surface is then cleaned with a method chosen for its material and condition, working from the top of any slope so dirty water runs away from the house. Where algae is the main problem, a suitable treatment may be applied to deal with what washing leaves behind. On block paving, joints are re-sanded afterwards to lock the blocks and slow weed regrowth.

Why we do not simply turn up the pressure

High pressure aimed carelessly strips jointing sand from block paving, carves lines into concrete, loosens stones in tarmac and resin, and drives water under thresholds. It can also leave a drive that greens over faster than before because the surface has been opened up.

Controlled pressure, the right nozzle and distance, and patience with stubborn patches give a cleaner, more even result that lasts. It is the same thinking behind our roof work, where we never pressure wash tiles.

Before you book

Please move cars off the drive before the visit and let us know about outside taps, any gates that need opening and where the drive drains to. If the roof or gutters are also being done, we clean the drive last so falling debris does not land on the clean surface.

If you have noticed blocks rocking, dips that hold water or cracks wide enough to trip on, mention them. Cleaning makes those faults easier to see but cannot repair them, and we will point them out so you can decide what to do.

Combining driveway cleaning with other work

Many customers book a driveway clean alongside patio cleaning, gutter cleaning or roof moss removal, so the whole exterior is done in one visit. Our dedicated block paving cleaning page goes into more detail on block drives.

Landlords and letting agents often book driveway cleaning between tenancies; our landlords and agents page explains how we handle access and photographs for rental properties.

Common questions

Do you pressure wash driveways?

We use controlled washing suited to the surface. Pressure, nozzle and distance are adjusted so joints, binder and stone are not damaged.

Will you re-sand my block paving?

Yes. On block drives, joints are re-sanded after cleaning to lock the blocks and slow weeds returning.

Can you remove oil stains?

Many oil stains lighten well with a suitable treatment. Very old or deep stains may leave a shadow, and we will say so first.

Do I need to be home?

Not always. Cars need moving off the drive and we need access to an outside tap; we confirm the details when booking.

Do you seal driveways?

No. We clean driveways. Sealing is carried out by specialist firms, and the clean comes first.

Can you clean gravel drives?

Gravel is cleared rather than washed: weeds and moss are lifted, edges tidied and debris removed. Borders of block or brick can be cleaned at the same time.
