Blocked Downpipe at Ground Level or Drain Connection
Not every downpipe blockage is up at the gutter. Sometimes water runs down the pipe perfectly well and then backs up at the bottom, spilling out of the joint at ground level or flooding around a gully. The fix depends on where the water is trying to go.
How downpipes finish at the ground
Some downpipes end in a shoe that discharges onto the ground, a soakaway grid or a water butt. Others go straight into an underground pipe or a gully, which is a small trapped drain at ground level. Knowing which you have is the first step.
Signs of a blockage at the bottom
Water bubbling out of a joint near the ground, a gully that overflows in rain, a puddle that forms at the foot of the pipe or water seeping out around the pipe collar are all signs that the problem is low down rather than at the gutter.
Gully blockages
Gullies catch leaves, silt and moss washed down the pipe. Over time they fill up and stop draining. Lifting the grate and removing the debris often restores the flow. A gully that refills quickly or smells may point to a problem further along the drain.
Drain connection problems
Where a downpipe goes straight into the ground, the blockage may be in the underground pipe. Roots, collapsed sections or silt can stop the water. That is a drainage job, and a drainage specialist with camera equipment is the right person to diagnose it.
What we can do
We clear gutters, downpipes and accessible shoes and gullies, and test the flow to show where the water stops. If the pipe runs clear but the underground drain does not, we will tell you so you can call a drainage company with confidence.
Why it matters
Water that cannot get away at ground level soaks into walls and foundations near the pipe. Persistent dampness at the base of a wall is a common result. Dealing with the blockage early avoids that.
Water butts and diverters
Downpipes feeding water butts often have a diverter fitted part way down. These have small filters or channels that block with grit and moss, so water bypasses the butt or spills from the diverter. Cleaning the diverter is usually simple, but the gutter above is the real source of the debris.
Soakaways
Some downpipes drain to a soakaway, a buried pit that lets water soak into the ground. Over many years soakaways can silt up and stop draining, so water pools at the foot of the pipe after rain. If the pipe and gully run clear but water still sits, the soakaway may be the cause, and a drainage specialist can investigate.
Paths and ground levels
Where a path or patio has been raised over the years, it can end up close to the bottom of the downpipe or cover a gully. That makes blockages more likely and splashes water against the wall. It is worth looking at how the ground meets the pipe if problems keep returning.
Smells and standing water
A gully that smells may have lost its water seal or have rotting debris sitting in it. Clearing it often solves the smell. If it persists, the drain beyond may need inspection.
Shared drains
On terraced and semi-detached houses, downpipes from neighbouring homes may join the same underground drain. A blockage further along can affect more than one property. A drainage company can confirm where the drain runs and who is responsible.
Ground-level checks you can do
Lift a gully grate and look for leaves and silt. Watch the downpipe shoe during rain for backing up. These are safe checks from the ground.

Frequently asked questions
Why does water come out at the bottom joint?
Usually because the gully or drain below is blocked and water is backing up.
Can you clear a gully?
Accessible gullies at the foot of downpipes can usually be cleared as part of the job.
What if the underground drain is blocked?
That needs a drainage specialist. We can confirm whether the downpipe itself runs clear.
Is a blocked gully causing my damp wall?
It can be. Water pooling at the base of a wall soaks into the brickwork.
How do I stop gullies blocking?
Keep gutters clear so less debris washes down the pipe.
Can leaves in a gully cause flooding?
Yes. A blocked gully overflows in heavy rain, sending water across paths or against walls.
How often should gullies be cleared?
Check them after autumn leaf fall and whenever you notice slow drainage.
Is the drain my responsibility?
Usually the part serving only your property is. Shared drains may be different. A drainage company or your water company can advise.
