Concrete Driveway Cleaning Explained
Plain concrete drives are hard-wearing, but they are not stain-proof. Over a few years a pale slab can turn grey, black-speckled and green along its joints. Because concrete looks so tough, people often assume it can take any amount of pressure or acid. In reality the top layer, called the laitance or cream, is thin, and once it is worn away the stone underneath is exposed and holds dirt more readily.
Why concrete darkens
Concrete has fine pores that absorb water carrying soil, pollen and organic matter. In damp areas, black algae spots and green films form. Under trees, sap and leaf staining add brown patches. Near the road, vehicle grime and tyre rubber build up in the wheel tracks.
The expansion joints between bays, often filled with a soft strip or sealant, catch soil and turn into a line of moss and weeds.
Protecting the surface while cleaning
Strong acids sold for patio cleaning can etch concrete, leaving it rougher and patchy. A tightly focused jet can also carve lines into the surface, especially on older or poorly finished slabs, leaving visible stripes once dry.
We clean concrete with an approach suited to its condition: growth cleared from joints first, then a controlled wash across the whole area so the finish looks even rather than striped.
Expansion joints and edges
Joints are where most of the green comes from. Clearing them properly matters more than chasing the last speck on the open slab. Once soil is removed, it becomes obvious whether the joint filler is intact or has perished and needs replacing by someone who repairs concrete.
Edges against lawns and borders tend to have soil splashed onto them; a short gravel strip or simply sweeping the edge after mowing keeps that soil off.
Rust, oil and other marks
Orange rust marks come from metal furniture, bins or fertiliser granules. Oil drips soak into the pores beneath the car. Paint and tar marks are sometimes tracked in from the road. Each needs its own treatment, and some will only lighten rather than disappear.
We will tell you which marks are likely to shift before work starts. Read our oil stain guide for why oil is often the most persistent.
Cracks and settlement
Fine surface crazing is common and mostly cosmetic. Wider cracks, raised edges or bays that have dropped point to movement in the ground below. Cleaning will make those faults easier to see but cannot fix them.
If a crack is a trip risk, we will mention it so you can decide whether to get a repair quote from a groundworks or surfacing firm.
Looking after a concrete drive
Sweep regularly, clear leaves before winter, and keep downpipes discharging into drains rather than across the slab. Deal with fresh oil drips quickly with an absorbent material. In winter, take care with de-icing products on young concrete, as some can damage the surface.
Our how often to clean a driveway guide helps you plan a sensible routine.
Sloping drives and run-off
Concrete drives that fall towards the house need extra thought, because dirty water and loosened debris head for the front door, air bricks and garage threshold. We work from the top of the slope downwards and keep an eye on where water is going throughout.
If the drive falls to a gully or soakaway, it helps to know whether it has been cleared recently. Dirty water from a clean adds silt, so a sluggish drain may need attention too.
Pattern-imprinted concrete
Printed or stamped concrete is usually coloured and sealed when laid. Its coating behaves differently from plain concrete, and aggressive cleaning can strip or cloud it. If your drive has a pattern or colour, tell us at quote stage so the method suits it.
Once a printed drive's original sealer has worn, recoating is a specialist job, which we can explain but do not carry out.

Frequently asked questions
Should I use acid on my concrete drive?
Not without care. Strong acids can etch the surface and leave it uneven in colour. We choose products to suit the concrete rather than reaching for acid by default.
Why does my concrete drive look stripy after jet washing?
A narrow jet moved unevenly can wear lines into the top layer. A controlled, even technique avoids this.
Can you remove rust marks from concrete?
Many rust marks lighten well with the right treatment, though deep or old marks may not disappear completely. We will say what is realistic.
Do you repair cracked concrete?
No, we clean the surface. Wider cracks or sunken bays need a concrete or surfacing repairer.
How long before I can park on it?
Usually as soon as the surface is dry enough to walk on, which depends on the weather. We will confirm on the day.
Can you clean printed concrete?
Yes, with a gentler approach than plain concrete because the coloured surface and any sealer can be stripped by harsh methods.
