What decides how long it takes

The stages of a typical clean

It helps to picture the job in steps. First comes protecting the ground around the house and getting safe access. Next, heavy moss is removed by hand, working carefully so the tiles aren't damaged. Then the roof is cleaned with soft, roof-safe methods to lift dirt, algae and lichen. A biocide treatment is often applied afterwards to kill spores and slow regrowth. The last stage is clearing the gutters of the moss that has come down and tidying the site.

The scraping stage is usually the longest on a neglected roof. On a roof that is mostly stained rather than mossy, the cleaning and treatment take up most of the time.

Why the gutters are part of the job

Moss has to go somewhere when it comes off a roof, and much of it lands in the gutters. Leaving it there would cause overflows at the next heavy rain. Clearing the gutters at the end is therefore part of doing the job properly, not an optional extra, and it adds a little time to the day.

Do you need to be home?

Usually not for the whole visit, as the work is all outside. It's useful to be around at the start to agree access and point out anything we should know, such as a fragile greenhouse or a pond, and at the end to see the result. Keep cars off the drive directly under the eaves if you can, and bring in washing and garden furniture from beneath the roof edges.

After the clean

A cleaned roof looks better straight away. Where biocide has been applied, any remaining traces of growth keep dying back over the following weeks rather than vanishing on the day, which is normal. Rain helps wash the dead residue away.

How long the result lasts depends on the roof's position. Shaded, north-facing and tree-lined roofs green up sooner than open ones, which is why a biocide is worth considering.
