Bungalow Roof Cleaning

Bungalows are often thought of as easy roofs, but their long, low slopes collect a lot of moss, especially on the shaded side. Because the whole roof is visible from the street, growth can make a bungalow look tired quickly. Cleaning a bungalow roof follows the same careful approach as any other, with a few points specific to this type of house.

Why bungalow roofs grow so much moss

Bungalow roofs are usually large relative to the house, with long slopes that catch little direct sun on one side. Many have concrete interlocking tiles, which hold moisture and give moss a good foothold. Nearby hedges and trees often shade the lower part of the roof.

The result is often a roof that is clean on the sunny side and thick with moss on the other.

How a bungalow roof is cleaned

Moss is removed by hand, working with the direction of the tiles so edges are not lifted. Loose debris is cleared from the roof and valleys, and the gutters are cleared afterwards. Where suitable, a soft wash and biocide are applied to deal with algae and lichen and slow regrowth.

We never pressure wash roof tiles. Our concrete tile roof cleaning page explains why.

Dormers and loft conversions

Many bungalows have had dormers added, which create extra valleys, flashing and small roof sections. These areas collect debris and need careful attention. Flat-roofed dormers have their own needs.

Our flat roof cleaning page covers flat sections.

Gutters on bungalows

Bungalow gutters are low, which makes them easier to check from the ground but also means they are directly above paths, windows and patios. Moss falling from the roof collects in them quickly. Clearing them is a natural part of a bungalow roof clean.

See our guide on moss falling into gutters for more.

Access and what is below

Bungalows often have conservatories, porches and garages attached, and paths running close to the walls. We plan access around these, and never rest ladders on conservatory roofs.

Tell us about anything beneath the roof edge when you enquire.

Faults revealed by cleaning

Removing moss can reveal cracked or slipped tiles and loose ridge mortar that were hidden underneath. We point out anything we see and quote roof repairs separately.

Concrete tiles also fade with age, so cleaning reveals the tile rather than restoring factory colour.

Chalet bungalows

Chalet bungalows have rooms in the roof, with steep slopes and often large dormers. Their roofs are taller than a standard bungalow and may need different access. Valleys where dormers meet the main roof collect moss.

Bungalows for older homeowners

Many bungalows are owned by people who would rather not climb ladders. Having someone check and clear the gutters and roof means problems are dealt with without risk. Family members can arrange quotes on a relative's behalf.

We can send photographs to whoever arranged the work.

Front gardens and driveways

Bungalows often have small front gardens and driveways running close to the house. Moss falling from the roof lands on them. Patio and driveway cleaning can follow roof work.

See our block paving cleaning page.

Hipped bungalow roofs

Many bungalows have hipped roofs, with four slopes meeting at short ridges and hip lines. Hip tiles bedded in mortar can work loose, and moss often settles along the hips. Cleaning a hipped roof means attention to every slope and edge.

We point out any loose hip or ridge tiles we see.

Bungalow gutters and paths

Because bungalow gutters are low, overflow lands right beside the walls and on paths, often near the front door. Green, slippery paths along the side of a bungalow are frequently caused by gutters dripping above them.

Clearing the gutters and then the paths deals with both.

Frequently asked questions

Is cleaning a bungalow roof cheaper than a house?

Not necessarily. Bungalow roofs can be large with heavy moss. Size, growth and access all shape the quote.

Do you clear bungalow gutters too?

Yes. Gutters are cleared after moss removal, because moss falls into them during the work.

Can you clean around dormers?

Yes. Dormers add valleys and flashing that need careful attention, and flat dormer roofs are assessed separately.

Can a family member arrange the work?

Yes. Tell us who lives at the property, who is arranging the quote and who should receive photographs.

Will roof cleaning disturb my bungalow's loft insulation?

Cleaning is done from outside and does not involve the loft. Hand methods avoid forcing water under the tiles.

How often do bungalow gutters need clearing?

It depends on nearby trees and roof moss. Many need clearing once a year, more often under trees.
