Can You Clean Solar Panels Yourself Safely?

Many solar panel owners wonder whether cleaning is something they can do themselves. For ground-mounted arrays and panels on low garage or shed roofs, it often is. For panels on a house roof, the real danger is not the cleaning but getting to them. This guide sets out what is sensible, what to avoid and when to call someone with the right access and experience.

Work from the ground where possible

Never climb onto a pitched roof to clean panels. Wet glass is extremely slippery, roof tiles can break underfoot, and falls from height cause serious injuries every year. Leaning a ladder against a gutter is also risky; gutters are not designed to take that load.

For ground-mounted panels and low flat roofs you can reach safely, cleaning from the ground or a stable platform is reasonable.

Water and a soft brush

Clean water and a soft brush or sponge on an extendable pole are usually enough. Soft water helps reduce marks as the glass dries. Work in the cool of the morning or evening, because cold water on hot glass can cause stress, and fast drying leaves streaks.

Rinse gently. A garden hose on a normal setting is fine; a pressure washer is not.

What to avoid

Avoid pressure washers, abrasive pads, scrapers, washing-up liquid in strong mixes, solvents and household glass cleaners unless your panel manufacturer approves them. These can damage anti-reflective coatings and the seals around frames, and some may affect your warranty.

Never spray water into junction boxes or cabling, and do not tamper with electrical parts.

Electrical safety

Panels generate electricity whenever light falls on them; you cannot switch them off at the panel. Damaged panels, cracked glass or exposed wiring should not be touched or cleaned. Report damage to your installer.

If you notice burn marks, melted plastic or a smell of burning, contact your installer straight away.

When to call a professional

Book a professional clean if panels are on a house roof, if they are covered in droppings, moss or lichen, or if birds are nesting underneath. Someone with experience can also look at the frames, the roof around the array and the gutters below.

Our cleaning frequency guide helps you decide whether a clean is needed at all.

Combining jobs safely

If you are already planning roof moss removal or gutter cleaning, include the panels in the same visit. It is safer and more efficient for one team to set up access once than for different trades to repeat it.

Our solar vs roof cleaning guide explains how the two jobs differ.

Long-reach poles and their limits

Extendable poles with soft brushes can reach panels on a single-storey roof from the ground. On a two-storey house, the angle becomes awkward, the pole bends and it is hard to see what you are doing. Water running down the pole is also a nuisance.

If you cannot see the glass clearly or control the brush, it is time to stop and book help.

Leave birds and nests alone

If you find nesting material or birds under the panels, do not poke or pull at it. Active nests are protected, and disturbing them from a ladder is dangerous too. Note what you see and seek help with proofing once nesting is over.

Our pigeons under panels guide explains the options.

Insurance and warranties

Some installers or manufacturers specify cleaning methods to keep warranties valid. Check your paperwork before using any product. Home insurance policies vary on cover for accidental damage caused while doing your own maintenance.

When in doubt, plain water and a soft brush are the safest choice.

Hard water marks

Tap water in much of southern England is hard, and it can leave chalky spots on glass as it dries. Rinsing in cool conditions, and drying spots with a soft cloth where you can safely reach, helps. Some owners use collected rainwater for rinsing ground-level panels.

Marks from hard water are cosmetic and usually wash away with the next rain or clean.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a pressure washer on solar panels?

No. High pressure can damage glass coatings and frame seals.

Is washing-up liquid safe on panels?

Strong detergents can leave residue or harm coatings. Plain water and a soft brush are safer unless your manufacturer advises otherwise.

Should I climb on the roof to clean panels?

No. Roof access is the main danger. Clean from the ground or use a professional.

Can I turn my panels off before cleaning?

Panels produce electricity whenever light reaches them. Avoid electrical parts and never clean damaged panels.

When is the best time of day?

Early morning or evening, when the glass is cool and water dries more slowly.

Will cleaning panels myself void my warranty?

It depends on the manufacturer. Check your paperwork, and avoid harsh products or abrasive tools.
