Solar Panel Cleaning vs Roof Cleaning

Solar panels sit on the roof, so it is easy to assume cleaning them is just part of roof cleaning. In practice the two jobs use different methods because glass panels and roof tiles have different weaknesses. Understanding the difference helps you ask the right questions and decide whether to book them together.

Different surfaces, different risks

Roof tiles are porous and covered in moss, algae and lichen that root into their surface. Panels are smooth glass with coatings and sealed frames. What is right for one can harm the other.

Abrasive scraping that is careful enough for a sound concrete tile would scratch glass. Treatments chosen for roof moss may not be suitable for panel coatings.

How roof cleaning works

On roofs, we remove moss by hand, then apply a soft wash and biocide where suitable to deal with what remains. We never pressure wash roof tiles, because high pressure damages tiles and pushes water where it should not go.

Our roof cleaning page explains the roof process.

How solar panel cleaning works

Panel cleaning uses clean water, soft brushes and low pressure to lift dirt and droppings without scratching the glass or forcing water into frames. Moss on the frame edges is eased away gently.

Products, where used, are chosen for compatibility with solar glass. The approach for your system is confirmed at quote.

Why order matters

If both jobs are needed, the roof is generally cleaned first, working carefully around the array, and the panels are cleaned afterwards so any debris or run-off from the roof does not settle on clean glass.

Gutters are cleared last, catching whatever has fallen from both.

Benefits of one visit

Setting up access once is safer and usually more efficient. One team can see how moss on the tiles is spreading onto the panels, whether birds are nesting underneath and whether gutters below the array are blocked.

It also means one conversation about the whole roof rather than coordinating different contractors.

When you might only need one

A newer roof with little moss may only need its panels cleaning. A roof without panels obviously only needs roof cleaning. Panels in an open, clean setting may stay clear while the roof around them greens over, especially on the north side.

Our moss and lichen on panels guide explains how growth spreads.

Run-off from roof treatments

When a roof is treated around an array, care is taken to keep treatment off the panels where it is not suitable. Any splashes are rinsed from the glass. This is one reason the panels are usually cleaned after the roof rather than before.

On roofs with many panels, the layout affects how the tiles around them can be reached, and we plan access with that in mind.

Moss under the array

Moss on the tiles directly beneath panels is hard to see and harder to reach. Removing panels is not part of our work, but moss at the edges and in reachable gaps can be removed. If moss under the array is causing a problem, we will explain what is realistic.

Mesh proofing around an array can also stop debris and leaves collecting underneath in future.

Cost of combining jobs

Combining roof, panel and gutter work means access is set up once and the visit is planned as a whole. Each part is still quoted separately, so you can see what each costs and choose what you need.

We do not publish fixed prices because roof size, panel count and access vary so much.

Questions to ask before booking

Ask any contractor how they will clean the panels, what they will use on the glass, how they will protect the panels while cleaning the roof and what they do if they find damage. Clear answers show they understand the difference between the two jobs.

Also ask whether gutters are included, as debris from both roof and panels lands there. Our questions to ask a gutter cleaner guide covers that side.

Asking for a combined quote

Tell us whether you want the roof, panels, gutters or all three. We quote each part clearly so you can choose. See our solar panel cleaning service for details.

Frequently asked questions

Is solar panel cleaning included in roof cleaning?

It can be added, but it is a separate task with different methods. We quote it clearly.

Do you pressure wash roofs with solar panels?

No. We never pressure wash roof tiles, with or without panels.

Which is cleaned first, roof or panels?

Usually the roof, then the panels, then the gutters, so each stage stays clean.

Can roof moss products be used on panels?

Not automatically. Any product used on panels should suit solar glass.

Will you check for birds under my panels?

Yes, we look for signs of nesting and tell you what we see.

Do you remove solar panels to clean the roof?

No. We clean around arrays and remove moss from the edges and reachable gaps.
