Roof Cleaning Before Painting or Re-rendering Your House
If you are planning to repaint the outside of your house or have it re-rendered, the roof is worth thinking about first. Anything that comes off the roof, whether moss, grit or treatment runoff, travels down towards the walls. Getting the order right protects the money spent on new finishes.
Why the roof comes first
Roof cleaning dislodges debris, and some of it inevitably reaches gutters, downpipes and walls. If the walls have just been painted or rendered, that debris and any runoff can mark them. Cleaning the roof first means the walls are finished last, with nothing above them waiting to fall.
Gutters and downpipes
Blocked or leaking gutters are one of the main causes of stained walls and damp patches. Before new paint or render goes on, gutters should be cleared and any leaking joints dealt with, otherwise the new finish will be stained by the same water that marked the old one.
Allowing time for treatment
Treated algae and lichen fade over the weeks after a roof clean as rain rinses them away. Some of that rinse water runs down through the gutters. Leaving a gap between roof treatment and decorating, where your schedule allows, lets the roof settle before the walls are finished.
Fascias and soffits
Fascia boards and soffits sit between the roof and the walls. If they are being painted, they should be cleaned after the roof and before the walls. If they are UPVC, cleaning them is a quick way to freshen the whole frontage.
Scaffolding and access
Where scaffolding is going up for rendering or painting, ask your contractor whether roof and gutter work can be scheduled while it is in place. Sometimes this suits everyone; sometimes the roof is better done separately first. It is a conversation worth having early.
What to tell us
Let us know your decorating or rendering dates when you ask for a quote. We can plan the roof and gutter work so it finishes in good time.
New render and runoff
Fresh render and masonry paint can be marked by water spilling from gutters or splashing back from the ground. Before the finish goes on, make sure downpipes discharge properly and that gutters are not overflowing at corners or joints. Our water down walls guide explains the usual causes.
Planning the whole exterior
The simplest order for exterior work is roof, then gutters and downpipes, then fascias and soffits, then walls and windows, then paths and patios. Each stage sends dirt downwards, so working from the top keeps finished areas clean. See the order to clean a house exterior for detail.
Talking to your decorator
Share your roof cleaning dates with your decorator or renderer so they can plan around them. Some prefer the gutters freshly cleared before they start, so water is directed away from their work during the job.
Windows and frames
Fresh paint on window frames and sills can be marked by dirty water spilling from gutters or by debris from the roof. Doing roof and gutter work first protects new paintwork on windows as well as walls.
Selling after redecoration
If you are smartening the outside of the house before selling, a clean roof and gutters complete the picture. See cleaning before selling.
Algae on walls below the roof
Green algae on walls often traces back to water from above: overflowing gutters, leaking joints or drips from the roof edge. Painting over it without fixing the source means it returns. Clearing and repairing gutters before decorating stops the cause, so new paint or render stays clean for longer.
Allow for the weather
Both roof treatment and exterior decorating depend on dry weather. Leave some slack in your plans so one job overrunning does not push the other into a wet spell.

Frequently asked questions
Should the roof be cleaned before painting?
Yes. Cleaning the roof first prevents debris and runoff marking freshly painted walls.
How long should I leave between roof cleaning and painting?
Where possible, leave some time for treated growth to rinse off. We can advise based on your schedule.
Do I need my gutters fixed first?
If they leak or overflow, yes. Otherwise the new finish may be stained the same way.
Can roof cleaning stain render?
Debris or runoff can mark walls below, which is why the roof should come before new finishes.
Do you clean render?
Our render cleaning guide explains the options; ask us about your property.
Will roof cleaning mark my walls?
Debris and runoff are directed into the gutters, but doing the roof first means any marks are dealt with before new finishes go on.
Can roof and render work be done at the same time?
Sometimes, if access allows. Plan with both contractors so the roof finishes first.
Should fascias be painted after the roof is cleaned?
Yes, so debris does not spoil fresh paint.
