Stained Fascias and Soffits Below Gutters

Fascia boards and soffits sit directly beneath the gutter, so they are the first place to show it when water escapes. Green streaks, black tide marks or dirty drips along a white fascia are a useful warning sign. Cleaning the stain without fixing the cause means it will soon return.

What fascias and soffits are

The fascia is the board running along the roof edge that the gutter brackets are fixed to. The soffit is the horizontal board underneath, closing the gap between the fascia and the wall. On many homes both are white uPVC; on older houses they may be painted timber.

Because the gutter sits on the fascia, any water that misses or escapes the gutter tends to run straight down it.

What the stains tell you

Streaks running down the face of the fascia from the top usually mean water is overflowing the gutter or running behind it. Stains concentrated at one point often sit below a leaking joint or corner. Green algae suggests the board stays damp for long periods. Black marks are often dirt carried in overflowing water.

Looking at where the staining starts helps locate the fault in the gutter above.

Water running behind the gutter

If the gutter has dropped or moved away from the roof edge, rainwater coming off the tiles can land behind it and run down the fascia. This often leaves an even stain along a long length rather than a single streak.

Re-aligning the gutter and replacing brackets usually stops this. See our sagging gutters guide.

Overflow and blocked gutters

A gutter full of leaves, moss or silt fills quickly in rain and spills over its front edge, carrying dirt down the fascia. Clearing the gutter and outlets removes the cause.

Our blocked gutters page explains how clearance works.

When staining means decay

On timber fascia, long-term wetting can lead to rot. Signs include flaking paint, soft spots and boards that look swollen or dark. Rotten fascia can no longer hold gutter brackets securely, which leads to sagging.

Fascia replacement is a separate job from gutter repair. If we see signs of decay while working on the gutters, we will point them out.

Cleaning the stains

Once the cause is fixed, light marks on uPVC fascias and soffits can often be cleaned by hand from a safe position. Our gutter cleaning clearances come with before-and-after photographs, and mentioning stained boards when you enquire lets us discuss what can be done at the same visit.

Avoid abrasive pads or strong solvents on uPVC, which can dull or mark the surface.

Staining under the soffit

Marks on the underside of the soffit, rather than the face of the fascia, can mean water is getting behind the gutter and dripping through gaps. Sometimes this comes from tiles at the eaves that no longer direct water into the gutter properly.

This pattern is worth reporting, as it can point to a problem at the roof edge rather than in the gutter itself.

Painted timber versus uPVC

Painted timber fascias show water damage as peeling or blistered paint, darkened wood and soft areas. uPVC does not rot but shows dirt and algae clearly, and it can discolour with age. Both stain when water runs down them repeatedly.

The material affects what can be done about the stain and how urgently decay needs looking at.

Dripping at the gutter ends

Stopends close off the ends of each gutter run. If a stopend seal has failed or the end has been knocked, water can drip from the end of the gutter down the fascia and wall. It often leaves a single streak at the corner of the house.

Resealing or remaking a stopend is a minor repair.

Getting it sorted

Send a photograph of the stained fascia from the ground and a wider shot of the gutter above it. Use the form on this page, WhatsApp or call for a free quote to clear the gutter and look at what is causing the stain.

Cleaning the outside of gutters and fascias

Once the cause of staining is fixed, the outside faces of gutters, fascias and soffits can be cleaned gently. Our UPVC gutter cleaning guide explains what that involves and what it can achieve.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my white fascia going green?

It is staying damp, usually because water is overflowing or running behind the gutter. Algae grows on boards that stay wet.

Will cleaning the fascia stop the stains?

Only temporarily unless the gutter problem is fixed. Clear or repair the gutter first.

Do you replace fascias and soffits?

We clear and repair gutters. If fascia is rotten, we will point it out so it can be looked at properly.

Can stained soffits mean a roof problem?

Sometimes. Staining under the soffit may mean water is getting behind the gutter at the roof edge. It is worth having it looked at.

Why is there a single streak at the corner of my house?

Often water is dripping from a gutter end where the stopend seal has failed, or from a corner joint above.
