Signs your gutters need emptying

Plants growing out of the gutter line are the obvious clue, but there are quieter ones. Water sheeting over the front edge during rain, a green streak down the wall below a corner, damp on an inside wall or a downpipe that stays dry in a storm all point to a blockage somewhere in the run.

In our part of the country the usual culprits are moss washed off the roof, leaves from nearby trees and fine silt that settles and sets in the bottom of the gutter. Once a gutter holds water, it quickly becomes a planter.

What a clearance includes

Our gutter cleaning visit is a complete clearance rather than a quick scoop of the front elevation:

• Every run emptied of moss, leaves, silt and debris
• Outlets unblocked so water can leave the gutter
• Downpipes checked for blockages
• Waste bagged and taken away, with a tidy finish on the ground
• Before and after photos of the gutters

Gutters and roof cleaning go together

Whenever we clean a roof, the gutters are cleared afterwards as a matter of course, because hand-scraped moss has to go somewhere. If you are planning both, it makes sense to book them together so you aren't paying for the gutters to be done twice.

If a gutter keeps refilling with moss within a season or two, the source is almost always the roof above it. In that case we'll talk you through whether a roof clean and biocide would save you money over repeated gutter visits.

Spotting faults while we're up there

An empty gutter shows its problems. While clearing, we look for dripping joints, loose brackets and lengths that have lost their fall. We'll point out anything we find and, because we also do gutter repairs, we can quote to put it right, though you're never obliged to have it done.

Many customers find autumn the most useful time to book, once most leaves are down, but a blocked gutter is worth clearing whenever you notice it rather than waiting for a particular month.

Getting ready for the visit

You don't need to be home for most gutter clearances, as long as we can reach every side of the house. Let us know about locked side gates, a conservatory or extension roof below a gutter, and anywhere a car is usually parked close to the wall, so we can plan ladder positions safely.

It also helps to tell us about anything you've already noticed: which corner overflows, where a stain has appeared on the brickwork, or a downpipe that gurgles in heavy rain. Those details point us straight at the likely blockage and mean nothing is missed.

Afterwards, the photos show each run empty and the outlets open. Keep them with your house records; they're a simple way to remember when the gutters were last done and to compare next time.
