Summer Roof and Gutter Checklist

Summer is the easiest time of year to look at your roof and gutters properly. Dry weather, long days and settled conditions make faults easier to spot and outside work easier to schedule. A short summer checklist can head off problems before the wetter months arrive.

Look at the roof from the ground

Walk around the house and look at each roof slope from the garden and the street. Note any slipped, cracked or missing tiles, gaps along the ridge, dark patches of moss and black streaks. Binoculars or a zoomed phone camera help.

Do not climb onto the roof. Ground-level photographs are enough to get advice.

Check the gutters while they are dry

Dry gutters make staining and faults easier to see. Look for sagging sections, gaps between the gutter and the roof edge, plants growing along the line and dark marks on fascias and walls that show where water escaped during winter.

Our guide on sagging gutters explains what a sag looks like.

Moss in dry weather

In summer moss often dries out, turning brown and crumbly. It can look less dramatic but is still there, and it tends to loosen and wash into gutters with the first heavy autumn rain.

Summer can be a practical time for moss removal, with the gutters cleared afterwards.

Algae and lichen

Black streaks and lichen patches are easy to see in bright light. Where suitable, a soft wash and biocide treatment needs a dry spell after application, which summer often provides.

Our black streaks guide explains what they are.

Seeds and blossom in the gutters

Trees drop seeds, catkins and blossom from spring into summer. Sycamore and maple seeds in particular can collect in gutters. If you have trees nearby, a summer check stops these building up before the leaves fall.

Our guide to leaves in gutters from trees covers seasonal debris.

Patios, paths and driveways

Summer is a good time to clean outside surfaces so they are usable for the season. If roof or gutter work is planned, do it first so debris does not land on freshly cleaned paving.

See our patio cleaning page for more.

Check flashing and the chimney

Lead flashing around chimneys and where roofs meet walls can lift or crack. In bright summer light, gaps and dark patches are easier to see from the ground. Mortar flaunching at the top of the chimney can also crack.

Our chimney and flashing care guide explains what to look for.

Look at conservatory and porch roofs

Summer sun shows up algae and dirt on conservatory and porch roofs clearly. Debris trapped in the glazing bars and small gutters can block drainage when autumn rain arrives.

Our porch and canopy guide covers small roofs.

Heatwaves and hosepipe bans

During very hot spells, roof work is planned for cooler parts of the day. If water restrictions are in place, any cleaning that uses water needs to respect them.

We will discuss timing if hot weather or restrictions affect your date.

Outside walls and render

Summer light shows green streaks, algae and dirt on walls and render clearly. Streaks directly below gutters usually point to overflow during the wet months. Note them so the cause can be dealt with before winter.

Quick summer checklist

Look at every roof slope from the ground. Check gutters for sagging, plants and stains. Look at flashing and chimneys. Note moss and streaks. Check conservatory and porch roofs. Book any autumn clearance and repairs.

Keep dated photographs so you can compare next year.

Ventilation and roof spaces

On a hot day, look in the loft if you can do so safely. Signs of condensation staining on timbers or damp insulation from the previous winter can point to ventilation or roof covering issues worth mentioning when the roof is next looked at.

Note anything unusual alongside your outside photographs.

Planning ahead for autumn

Book any gutter clearance you need for late autumn while you are thinking about it. If summer checks show a leaking joint or loose bracket, arrange a repair before the wet season. Send photographs through the form on this page, WhatsApp or call for a free quote.

Frequently asked questions

Is summer a good time to clean a roof?

Often, yes. Dry, settled weather suits roof work and gives treatments time to work. Very hot days need early starts.

What should I check on my gutters in summer?

Look for sagging, gaps at the roof edge, plants, staining on fascias and walls, and seeds from nearby trees.

Does dry moss still need removing?

Yes. It loosens in summer and washes into gutters in autumn rain.

Should I clear gutters in summer?

If trees nearby drop seeds or blossom, a summer clearance can help. Otherwise, late autumn usually suits.

Is summer a good time for gutter repairs?

Yes. Dry weather makes joints easier to reseal and lets faults be fixed before autumn rain.
